His heart rate held at 115 beats per minute the whole way. The Whoop logged it. The platform logged it. And somewhere in the AWS infrastructure he spent months building, an algorithm registered the first real data point of the experiment — not a prediction, not a pre-registration, not a plan on the record, but an actual thing that actually happened.
It is a modest fact. It is also, given everything that preceded it, the most important one so far.
The previous installment of this series ended on the night before genesis — a 2-out-of-100 score, zero habits completed, the last night of the old life spent in the old way. I wrote then that the bad nights don't stop, that the question was whether the system he'd built could interrupt the spiral before it got momentum. Monday was the first answer to that question, and the answer was: yes, but imperfectly. Which is, it turns out, the only honest version of yes available at the start of something like this.
The habit tracker still scored Day 1 a 39 out of 100 — the platform grades each day across sleep, training, food, and behavior, and a 39 is not a passing mark. The T0 habits, the ones he designated non-negotiable, went zero for seven. The walk he completed — the one that logged at 2.06 miles and 41 minutes — didn't satisfy the 5k threshold the plan requires. Primary exercise didn't happen. The vice he's working to leave behind, the one that has been threading through his evenings since his mother died, that didn't happen either.
And yet. He walked. Day 2, he walked again — 53 minutes, 2.78 miles, out the door at 6:20 in the morning this time, before the workday had a chance to crowd it out. His heart rate was 111 bpm, a shade calmer than the day before. The restlessness in his sleep dropped from 35 tosses to 26. His recovery ticked up from 33 percent to 39 percent — still in the red, still a body that hasn't caught up to its ambitions, but moving in the right direction by the smallest measurable increment.
This is what the beginning of a thing actually looks like. Not transformation. Not momentum. Just two consecutive days of imperfect forward motion from a body that, the night before it started, couldn't manage any.
There's a specific challenge embedded in writing about the first two days of a year-long experiment, and it has nothing to do with the data being thin — though it is, and I should say so plainly. Two days is not a trend. The recovery numbers, the sleep scores, the HRV readings — heart rate variability, the beat-to-beat variation that serves as a proxy for how recovered the nervous system is — all of it is baseline establishment, not signal. Matthew's HRV came in at 32 milliseconds on Monday morning, ticking to 34 by Tuesday. For context, the plan targets 50 milliseconds as a long-term goal. He is not close. He is also not supposed to be close yet. The plan's ramp discipline exists precisely because a body at 321 pounds, carrying years of accumulated stress and grief and the metabolic consequences of both, needs to earn intensity through consistency first.
What the two-day window does reveal, if you look at it sideways, is something about the texture of how this is starting. The sleep scores are genuinely good — 80 on the first night, 82 on the second, with efficiency hitting 98 percent on Tuesday night, meaning almost every minute he spent in bed was spent actually sleeping. The deep sleep percentage held at 26 percent across both nights, which is solid architecture. His body, whatever else it's struggling with, knows how to sleep. That's not nothing. Sleep is the foundation the plan is built on — Dr. Lisa Park, the sleep specialist on Matthew's Board, has been consistent about this since before genesis: recovery doesn't happen in the gym, it happens in the hours between sessions, and the hours between sessions are mostly sleep. The fact that the sleep data is the cleanest thing in the early packet is, in its quiet way, an encouraging sign.
The nutrition log is empty. I want to be precise about what that means: the plan calls for 1,800 calories a day and 190 grams of protein, tracked through MacroFactor, an app that adjusts targets based on actual weight trends over time. What is available is the character sheet — the platform's RPG-style scoring system that distills all seven health pillars into a single level. Matthew sits at Level 1 across every category. Foundation tier, everywhere, the system's way of saying: we are at the beginning. The Movement pillar's raw score is 4 out of 100, which is the honest math of two walks that didn't quite clear the 5k threshold. The Consistency pillar sits at 37, which is actually the most interesting number in the sheet — it's not zero, which means the system is already registering something, some early signal of behavioral pattern, even from two days of data. The level won't move until five or more days of sustained improvement accumulate. The system is patient in a way that Matthew, historically, has not always been.
The question I keep returning to, two days in, is one that the data can't answer yet: which Matthew showed up?
There are two versions of him that the prologue established. The first is the architect — the Senior Director who spent his weekends building a distributed computing platform to hold himself accountable, who pre-registered his predictions publicly, who designed a system sophisticated enough to flag his own avoidance behavior. That Matthew is extraordinary. That Matthew built something genuinely impressive.
The second is the man who scored a 2 on the night before it all began. Who has been carrying grief in his body for years. Who knows, intellectually, exactly what the hard nights cost him, and sometimes pays the cost anyway.
The first two days suggest both of them are present. The architect got the morning walk out the door at 6:20 AM on Tuesday. The other one is still showing up in the habit data, in the zeroed T0 scores, in the gap between what the plan calls for and what actually happened. This is not a crisis. It is, in fact, precisely the condition the system was designed to manage — the gap between the person you intend to be and the person you are at 10 PM when the day has run out and the old patterns are the path of least resistance.
The pre-registration document, filed before the first data point existed, predicted that daily step counts would register consistently between 6,000 and 7,000 steps across the first seven days. Two days in, that prediction is already under pressure. The walks are happening, but they're not clearing the threshold. Whether that's a rounding problem or a pattern problem is a question the next five days will answer.
For now: Day 1 actually happened. Day 2 happened too. The charging cables are doing their job. The sensors are talking to the platform. The morning brief is landing in his inbox.
The experiment, after months of being a plan, is a thing that is occurring.
